After a cold wet week, the sun shone on Saturday 1st June for a most enjoyable visit to Old Balloo House and Barn, the adjacent homes of friends Lesley Simpson and Moira Concannon in the village of Balloo in Co Down.

Lesley and Moira talk about the development of the garden.

Fifty five IGPS members and more than a dozen of their friends thoroughly enjoyed wending their way through a series of beautifully linked spaces, from the front garden of the modest Georgian Old Balloo House through the Margery Fish-style cottage garden to the rear, then on to a more enclosed rose and peony garden before plunging down the steep naturalistic glen and rounding off with the more modern planting style around the Barn.

June and Mike Snowdon enjoy the sunshine. Mike was honoured with the award of Honorary Membership at the recent AGM.

No-one went home empty-handed as the plant stall was packed with interesting and unusual offerings kindly donated from members’ gardens and a selection of second-hand gardening books.

Many thanks to Maeve Bell and Barbara Kelso for this report and photographs of the event.
