DESCRIPTION
Ballywalter House and Garden is the home of Lord & Lady Dunleath and has
been in the family for 170 years.
The Mansion House in Ballywalter Park was built in the Italianate Palazzo
style by the eminent architect Sir Charles Lanyon and has been afforded
Grade A * listing as being of exceptional architectural importance.
The house is surrounded by 30 acres of pleasure grounds and is situated
within the walled demesne of some 270 acres. The total Estate runs to over
1200 acres and is home to one of Northern Ireland’s largest dairy herds and
it also includes significant acreages of arable crops and mixed woodland.
The Walled Garden has been described by Lady Dunleath as her personal
paradise. The gardening team has worked hard in recent years to restore the
Walled Garden to its former glory.
ITINERARY
Numbers are strictly limited to a maximum of 60 members in total.
The event starts at 2.00 pm sharp and is expected to end by 5.00 pm.
The visit will consist of a tour of the house plus a tour of the garden.
Refreshments will be provided and are included in the ticket price.
On arrival, members will be split into two groups. The first group will
visit the house (complying with regulations) while the second group visits
the garden. Each of these tours will last approximately one hour. Following
this the first group will visit the garden while the second group visits the
house (complying with regulations) and again each tour will last
approximately one hour.
In terms of access / mobility issues, the following information has been
received:
– The tour of the house encompasses the ground floor only and there
are three easy steps up into the house on arrival and then three steps down
to the Gentlemen’s Wing and on to the Conservatory. Cars for seriously
disabled people can be driven to the Conservatory at the end of the tour to
collect them.
– As far as the gardens and pleasure grounds are concerned, the
lawns are relatively level and easy to negotiate, particularly in dry
weather when the ground is firm. The paths are gravel but unfortunately are
not wheelchair-friendly.
Directions to Ballywalter Park: These will be issued prior to the event to
those who have booked tickets.
