‘The Making of The Bay Garden’ by Frances MacDonald
Frances MacDonald has worked in gardening for over 35 years. She trained in the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin. After a spell in Japan, she worked in the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew. Her husband, Iain runs a design and landscaping business and they open their garden – The Bay Garden – in Camolin, Co Wexford to the public during the summer months. She has worked as the series consultant on the RTE Radio 1 programme ‘Planting Passions’ and she and Iain have featured in the ‘Garden Heaven’ programme on RTE television. She has also been a judge for the Garden Heaven Show, the All Ireland National Garden Competition, Harrogate Flower Show, Hillsborough Show and now judges at Bloom. She has a monthly column in The Irish Garden magazine. She also lectures to clubs and organisations. Frances is Garden Tours Manager with the Travel Department and organises and guides tours in Ireland, to the major horticultural shows and gardens in England, Madeira, Italy, France, Wales, Scotland, Japan, China, the States and South Africa.
From a neglected orchard and grounds surrounding an abandoned farmhouse and out-buildings, The Bay Garden has been developed by Iain and Frances MacDonald since they purchased it in 1988. It now consists of the Serpentine Garden, Cottage Garden, White Garden, Rose Garden, Hot and Funereal Borders, Pond Garden, Barn Garden, Woodland and Bog Garden and a Formal Vegetable – the last addition being Jardin Sheila which was completed in 2014…and they are now planning the next adventure! This lecture follows their progress over the past 27 years.
