FEBRUARY Saturday 28TH at 2.00pm

The first visit of the season is to Valerie and Hugh Montgomery’s estate at Benvarden near Ballymoney in County Antrim, BT53 6NN

This historic estate was built in the 1630’s and owned by the Montgomery family since 1798, the walled garden of circa 2 acres dates from 1788 and has been cultivated since then. The garden has been described by Terence Reeves-Smith in his Guide to Irish Gardens as “undoubtedly the best in private hands”

The principle focus of the visit at this time of year is the display of snowdrops but other aspects of the garden worth seeing include the splendid 90 feet long iron bridge built in 1878 by Robert Montgomery, which spans the River Bush.

Although the Gardens are not normally open at this time of year Valerie has kindly offered to open the café for teas / coffee.
